The role of the writer, as Peter Elbow sees it, is to distance him or herself from outside influences and to put their raw thoughts and own intelligences onto paper. The role, therefore, is to actually BE a writer as opposed to an academic whom merely regurgitates the views of other people. The academic takes the outside influences and puts them into coherent, graded papers to prove not that they can think, create, and write, but that they are capable readers.

goafr on paragraph 1:

I edited a few errors in sentence organization and made it more coherent as to whom was the subject.

dra08 on paragraph 1:

Do you think that’s true of the scholars you read, too? Or are just talking about what students are expected to do, as academics? I think you’ve pointed to a really interesting problem in the academy — only scholars get to think up new, cool stuff. Eh?

goafr on paragraph 1:

I am talking only of what students are expected to do inside the classroom. I believe that the goal of school is probably to eventually let us loose to have our own voice as scholars do, but the overwhelming impression I have recieved thus far is that until the point where I have paid my dues, so to speak, I’ve had to keep my ideas mostly to myself and just express the views of others. Of course this brings up the entire other issue of how nothing I would have to say is actually from myself but rather all of it is influenced by outside contexts, to no matter what I’d say it would still be some form of a regurgitation of someone else, probably coupled with that of yet another person.
