The role of the writer, as Peter Elbow sees it, is to distance him or herself from outside influences and to put their raw thoughts and own intelligences onto paper. The role, therefore, is to actually BE a writer as opposed to an academic whom merely regurgitates the views of other people. The academic takes the outside influences and puts them into coherent, graded papers to prove not that they can think, create, and write, but that they are capable readers.
